Yvonne Schoemaker was one of those blue eyed blondes that every high school boy dreams about. More importantly she was bright and playful with a sadistic ability to trounce me unmercifully on the tennis court while trying unsuccessfully to teach me to "Twenty-One Love" or something. But, hey she was unfair. Nobody could keep their eye on the ball when she was around. Believe me, the above rescan of an old year book picture doesn't begin to tell the story. Of course her smile still radiates through. This was the lady who helped me get back some of my confidence after loosing Sindy some years before. She was also Lady Vampire in our Monster Hops; explained on another page. In exchange for tennis I was teaching her the basics of SCUBA diving. Ever the show off, and trying to impress her one Friday evening, I dressed in my Regimental Police gear, signed out a jeep from the armouries, and drove her to the big city to see "The Great Escape." After the movie I took her home kissing her a reluctant good night. The next afternoon I received a phone call from her saying that her father told her I was not to see her again. When I could speak, I asked if I could talk to her dad. Perhaps in a few years, after I had made something of myself I could see her again, he informed me. That was that, only as far as me observing her skating with a new prospector on a following Sunday, again in the nearby city. I wasn't so much hurt by her father's views but by her choice to stay with her family. I was not her choice. I was however able to retrieve my deposit on the ring I had on lay-away. She married an accountant or something and is reported living just south of Ottawa, in Richmond, Ontario, not 50 klicks from Sindy in Kanata making Teddy Bears. Another reason I recall our last date that evening was that that was the day of the late John F. Kennedy's assassination in Dallas Texas. U.S.A I wasn't the only one to loose a loved one that ill-fated day.
